History of East Side House Settlement
Established in 1891 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, East Side House Settlement moved to the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx--within one of the poorest Congressional districts in the United States--in 1963. In Mott Haven:
*45% of residents fall within Federal poverty guidelines--more than twice the number in New York City overall.
*81% of children are born into poverty.
*2 out of every 3 men are unemployed, and 1 out of every 4 women.
*The number of youth between 16-19 years of age who are neither in school nor working is the highest in all of New York City. East Side House is a trusted, high-performing community resource. Our dedicated staff of 281 full and part-time teachers, social workers, and other experts serves approximately 8,000 residents from 17 different locations annually, with an operating budget in excess of $11 million. Nearly half of our funding comes from private philanthropy. Our focus is on education and technology training as gateways out of poverty. Programs include Early Childhood, After-School programs, Adult Education, Computer Technology, and Family Services. Additionally, East Side House now operates two high schools in partnership with the New York City Department of Education: Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School and Bronx Haven High School.
