Happy Fourth of July from the Winter Antiques Show! 💫
Produced around the time of the Civil War, the 34-star quilt pictured above is a masterpiece of abstraction. ⭐️
The quilt’s vintage is a reminder of the hard work it takes to build a “more perfect union.” Abraham Lincoln was the only president to serve under the 34-star flag. ✨
As the nation celebrates 242 years of independence, here’s to 242 more years of striving after our noble ideals! 🇺🇸
Featured: Patriotic Stars Quilt, United States, c. 1861–1875. Plain and printed cottons, 92 x 91-3/4 inches.

Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828), “Portrait of George Washington’s Cook,” possibly of Hercules, Mt. Vernon’s chef and presidential cook in the nation’s early capital of Philadelphia, 1795-97
In early 1797, Hercules dashed for freedom in Pennsylvania, a free state, ahead of Washington’s retirement and subsequent return to Mt. Vernon, Virginia, where Hercules would have remained enslaved until Washington’s death.

The Winter Antiques Show is a … galaxy of colliding worlds. Nearly every booth provides a glimpse into some areas of visual culture, from Egyptian antiquities to American folk art to postwar Italian art glass.
